CJ Griffin Quoted in New Jersey Law Journal Article Regarding Three New Policing Bills
CJ Griffin, partner and director of the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden P.C., was quoted in the New Jersey Law Journal article “Murphy Appoints New Internal Diversity Officer, Signs Police Bills Aimed at Diversifying Ranks.” In addition to discussing the establishment of a new Office of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, the article discusses three new policing bills signed by Gov. Phil Murphy – S-2765, S-2766 and S-2767 – intended to help diversify the state’s police ranks. The article notes that reaction to the bills by longtime advocates of civil rights and police reform was somewhat subdued.
CJ Griffin, executive director of the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Hackensack-based Pashman Stein Walder Hayden, who’s honed a reputation as a pitbull on pushing for police transparency and accountability measures, agreed that the root of the problem—the police’s expansive powers—needs to be addressed head-on.
“We need the state to pass real police reform, like making police disciplinary records public and creating strong civilian complaint review boards,” Griffin said. “These measures they are passing do very little without also passing real transparency and accountability measures.”
