CJ Griffin, Partner and Director of the Justice Gary S. Stein Public Interest Center at Pashman Stein Walder Hayden, was quoted in op ed article that was published on NJ.com “On cop shootings, justice delayed.” The article discusses the 2019 New Jersey mandate that requires police-caused deaths to be handled by the state attorney general’s office and the challenges, such as covid, that have affected such a mandate. Governor Murphy’s recent budget also allocates additional funding for this unit.

That’s a good start. It bears watching to see if that helps resolve these cases faster, because as police transparency expert CJ Griffin of Pashman Stein points out: “COVID slowed everything down, but these investigations were dragging on prior to the pandemic.

“My first police records case involved the 2014 shooting of Kashad Ashford, and it took more than a year for the outcome. We can point to many cases in 2018 and 2019 that took more than a year or year and a half, which leaves the family in pain and without closure.”

Indeed, Griffin notes that there were 14 people who died in police-related incidents in 2018, and many of them weren’t settled until the end of 2019 or later.
